In November 2008, the first women's school, the Mahadevi Women Education Centre (MWEC), was inaugurated in a slum in Patan, Nepal's third largest city. In 2020, the centre moved to more spacious premises in Nakhipot. The school is housed in six rooms here (bottom left, ground floor).
Several teachers teach 35 to 40 women aged between 18 and 65. The lessons are largely free of charge; the women pay a small fee according to their means.
Since 2011, sewing and tailoring courses have also been held at the MWEC, financed by the Georg Kraus Foundation in Hagen i.W. The Friday activities with communal meals, excursions, celebrations and general topics such as health, hygiene and women's rights are also important for the women's socialising and the atmosphere.
